Without much rest after his successful Volta a Catalunya, Alejandro Valverde travels to Navarre and Basque Country to compete in a new edition of the GP Miguel Indurain and the Tour of the Basque Country, his second World Tour race of the season. The competition that pays tribute to the five-time winner of the Tour de France departs once again from Estella and surpass the climbs of Guriguillano, Lezaun and Eraul in its final part. The ascent to the Basilica of Puy, where Valverde won in the 2014 edition, will end the race.
Next Monday starts in Pamplona the 57th edition of the Tour of the Basque Country, that is known as Itzulia. A route full of ups and downs with hardly a meter flat and very little choice for sprinters. The most common thing is that the general is decided in the last two days, both with the arrival in the city of Eibar. The first one has the climb to Usartzako just 2 kilometers away from the finish and the second one is an individual time trial of 27 kilometers.
The best result of the Movistar Team rider in the Basque Country was the second place in the general classification of 2006. His triumphs in this race date from his first years as a professional: 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
